Lydia Jeon started studying in the United State as an exchange student from Korea at University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Ms. Jeon received Performance Music Scholarships from the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University, IL. Here she studied piano performance under Dr. Luimila Lazar and earned her double B.M. in piano performance and music education. She also received her Illinois teacher certification to teach music for grades K-12. Ms. Jeon is also certified to teach music using the Orff Approach after completing the Orff Schulwerk training courses at DePaul University. Ms. Jeon believes teaching music to students is a lifetime commitment, and she seeks to find innovative ways to help students learn better. During her 4 years teaching at Stephan Mather High School, Ms. Jeon developed and built piano lab group classes using MIDI files and electric keyboards. Many of Ms. Jeon’s high school students earned the highest ratings at the Illinois State Board of Education’s state-wide music competition. In 2008 Ms. Jeon was nominated and selected by students to receive the Suave Performance Plus Award. Created by Suave© in 1997. This award honors Chicago Public School (CPS) high school teachers who have demonstrated outstanding service above and beyond their job requirements to their students. After earning her M.M. in Piano Pedagogy under Dr. Mihkhail Yanovistky at Northeastern Illinois University, Ms. Jeon became a teaching artist in the university’s collaboration with the Chicago Public School’s College Bridge Program. Ms. Jeon teaches applied piano and musicianship classes to under-privileged gifted students. Ms. Jeon also teaches primary, lower and upper elementary school students at Montessori Academy of Chicago. She teaches general music classes based on Orff approach and private piano lessons. Ms. Jeon emphasizes early exposure to musical experiences, proper techniques and practice skills. She is trained in Suzuki and Classical methods, she recognizes needs of diverse students and believes a mature, constructive teaching approach and effective working relationships between students and parents are crucial to providing a stimulating learning environment that celebrates the achievements of every individual. Ms. Jeon performs solo, chamber music and enjoys working with musical theater. She is a member of the Asia Pacific Piano group, a part of Asian American Music Society (AAMS). She has been activity involved with Orff Schulwek Association (OSA), attending conferences and workshops. Ms. Jeon joined the faculty at the New Music School in 2013.
