The mission of the Orpheus Hellenic Folklore Society is to perpetuate the rich history and traditions of Greek folk dances, songs, and music. Orpheus fulfills its mission by educating its members and audiences through dance and music performances, workshops, lectures, publications, and its website. Orpheus' repertoire includes a wide variety of mainland and island dances, and its members perform in authentic costumes which are representative of these regions, and are one-of-a-kind in this area of the country. The Orpheus Adult Group is comprised of young adults from the Chicago land area. The group has performed in numerous cultural and civic functions throughout Chicago, the United States, Canada and Greece. The Orpheus Youth Group, whose membership is open to children 10-15 years old, maintains a separate schedule of dance lessons and presentations, while complementing various adult group presentations and performances throughout the year. Among its highlights, Orpheus performed and participated in the 51st Pan-Macedonian Convention in Thessaloniki, Greece (voted the 1997 Cultural Capital of Europe) and the First Annual Celebration of Greek Artists Abroad in Athens at the Odeon of Herodus Atticus Theater at the foot of the Acropolis. During the summer of 2007 approximately two hundred Orpheus members and their families visited Kalamata, Greece. Highlights included three successful dance and choral performances, meetings and workshops with local officials and dance groups, as well as several excursions around the Kalamata vicinity. Additionally, Orpheus had the distinction of representing Greece by performing in the 1994 World Cup opening ceremonies at Soldier Field in Chicago in front of 65,000 fans, including U.S. President Clinton and an estimated worldwide television audience of over 1 billion! Established in May of 1989, the Orpheus Hellenic Folklore Society is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit, tax-exempt organization and its official functions are carried out by its Board of Directors.
